Why families choose body donation.

There are many reasons people choose to donate. For some, it's the hope of helping future generations. For others, it's a way to ease funeral expenses for the family they leave behind. Families looking for free cremation in Oklahoma City and across the state often come to us with both in mind. Whatever brings you here, your beliefs and comfort matter, and it's understandable to want time to think it over.

Donated bodies support medical education and medical research: anatomy training for medical students, surgical training, the testing of new medical devices and products, and education for physicians, medics and first responders. Every donor is cared for with respect, and all records are kept in strict confidence.

How to begin donation arrangements.

Registration starts with a phone call to (405) 443-8085 or an email to Acspermits@outlook.com. Our staff will guide you through every step of the application. Consent can be given before or at the time of death, either by the individual or by their next of kin.

  • If you're planning in advance, talk about your wishes with the people closest to you, keep our contact information with your planning documents, and decide who will be responsible for calling us when death occurs.
  • If a loved one has already passed away, call us to discuss whether donation may be possible. It helps to have their location and any medical information ready. Wherever in the state you live, we'll confirm transportation arrangements for your location.
  • Before arranging a transfer or embalming with another funeral home, call us first so the donation isn't affected.

Who can donate.

Every donation is reviewed individually. Our current eligibility guidelines accept donors:

  • Without HIV/AIDS.
  • Without Hepatitis B or C.
  • Without active COVID-19.
  • Under 250 pounds for men, and under 200 pounds for women.

Meeting these guidelines doesn't guarantee a donation will be accepted. If it can't be, we'll explain your other options, including direct cremation, and help you plan a farewell that still honors your loved one's wish to help others.

Remembering your loved one.

Donation can be part of a thoughtful remembrance. A private memorial service gives family and friends time to gather, share memories and honor the person they love, with favorite music, photographs, a reading or stories. It doesn't need to be elaborate; a quiet afternoon together can bring comfort too.

A viewing or a funeral with the body present may not be possible before donation, so talk with us before setting a date. We'll also give you an expected timeline for the return of cremated remains, so you can plan a memorial service, or have the ashes scattered, without relying on a date that isn't confirmed.

Other help with funeral expenses.

If donation isn't the right fit, other help may be available. Some Oklahoma counties offer assistance with burial or cremation for people without financial means, and some tribal nations offer funeral assistance to members. Veterans may be eligible for VA burial benefits. Contact your county government or tribal benefits office to ask what's available, and we're glad to help you find the right office.

Common questions

Free cremation questions

What families ask us most about whole-body donation.

Yes, when a whole-body donation is accepted. Donor transportation, cremation and the return of cremated remains are provided at no cost to your family. Extra certified death certificates, an obituary in the newspaper, a memorial gathering or an urn would be separate, and we'll tell you about any of those before you decide.

The individual can consent before death, or their next of kin can consent at the time of death. Registration is a phone call to (405) 443-8085 or an email to Acspermits@outlook.com.

We'll talk you through your other options, such as direct cremation, and help you plan a farewell that honors your loved one's wishes.

No. Organ donation for transplant, which many people register for with their driver's license, is a separate program. Whole-body donation supports medical education and research. If your loved one was a registered organ donor, let us know when you call so we can explain how the two work together.

The no-cost donation covers transportation, cremation and the return of cremated remains. A private memorial service is arranged separately, and we're glad to help you plan one.

Timing depends on the donation process, so ask us for the expected timeline before you set a date for a memorial or scattering.

Yes. Each program sets its own forms, eligibility and acceptance criteria. The University of Oklahoma's Willed Body Program, for example, has its own declaration and policies on viewing and final disposition. We can explain how our donation arrangements work.
